El Alhambra de Granada
Arguably the most exciting and romantic of all European monuments. The Alhambra, which is so called because of its red walls (in Arabic, meaning Red Castle), is located on top of the hill al-Sabika, on the left bank of the river Darro, to the west of Granada city. Sited on a strategic point, the complex is irregularly shaped and is surrounded by ramparts. Added to the city's boundaries in the 9th century, the castle became a military fortress with a view over the whole city, although it was not until the arrival of the first king of the Nasrid dynasty, Mohammed 1 in the 13th century, that royal residency was established in the Alhambra. This event marked the beginning of the Alhambra's most glorious period, where today the absolute brilliance and spirit of Moorish life and Culture are still in evidence.
It is advisable that trips to the Alhambra Palace are reserved in advance, particularly in the months of summer. For tickets, go to http://www.alhambratickets.com
The City of Baza
Baza, declared a City of Historical Interest, has an important historic and monumental heritage. It stands amidst natural surroundings that are not only of an extraordinary beauty but, at the same time, reveal the sharp contrast between the Sierra de Baza Nature Park and the Hoya plateau, stretching into the distance.
The gastronomy of Baza, which uses products grown on the large fertile plain, includes recipes of ancient Arab and Mediterranean tradition. Of the celebrations held in the city particularly worth mentioning is the tradition of the Cascamorras, held on 6 September and declared a fiesta of Andalusian tourist interest. There follows a 2 week fiesta.
It really is worth spending some time here, you won't be disappointed. Baza is only 20 minutes away by car
